Days of Innocence | Morgan Heim
Days of Innocence - Svalbard reindeer live in the fastest-warming place on earth. The are the world's smallest, and fattest, reindeer. They all exhibit dwarfism and are found only on the archipelago of Svalbard. Right now climate warming is making their food grow in abundance, helping them to fatten up before the winter. But already these reindeer are seeing too much of a good thing. Food can become locked away beneath ice during chaotic rain on snow events, and reindeer can stuffer heat stress. In February of 2025 a major winter rainstorm froze food beneath an impenetrable layer. Many reindeer died as a result.
Conservation photographer and filmmaker Morgan Heim explores personal stories behind protecting wildlife and their ecosystems. She is a National Geographic Explorer, Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, and founder of Neon Raven Story Labs — a production house dedicated to stories of nature and our relationships with it. A multi-recipient in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Big Picture and Siena International Photography Awards, you can find her work in Audubon, Smithsonian, National Geographic, and The New York Times.
