Tower Birds | Morgan Heim
Tower Birds, Former radar towers on Middleton Island, Alaska, serve as deluxe nest high-rises for black-legged kittiwakes. This form U.S. Airforce Base once monitored the skies for Soviet aircraft during the Cold War. Today it helps monitor birds. Biologists from the Institute for Seabird Research and Conservation converted the tower, so they could study the birds 24/7. Here, a parent returns to its chick after foraging at sea. Through controlled experiments, physical and behavioral monitoring, the birds are teaching researchers about responses to changing ocean conditions.
Conservation photographer and filmmaker Morgan Heim explores personal stories behind protecting wildlife and their ecosystems. She is a National Geographic Explorer, Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, and founder of Neon Raven Story Labs — a production house dedicated to stories of nature and our relationships with it. A multi-recipient in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Big Picture and Siena International Photography Awards, you can find her work in Audubon, Smithsonian, National Geographic, and The New York Times.
