La Parida Banco tract of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge protects some of the last 1% of native riparian forest in South Texas. This wildlife refuge has already seen significant destruction from border wall construction.
Krista Schlyer is a conservation photographer and writer living in the Washington DC area. Her focus is long-term conservation documentary projects with subjects ranging from the US-Mexico borderlands to the Anacostia River watershed. Schlyer’s work has been published by the BBC, Orion, The Nature Conservancy, High Country News, Newsweek and others. She is the author of three books including Continental Divide: Wildlife, People and the Border Wall, winner of the National Outdoor Book Award and Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography. Schlyer’s book, Almost Anywhere, chronicles a road trip to America’s national parks. Her book, River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia, won the 2019 National Outdoor Book Award.
